The first leg of the 50 Cent five borough tour touched down in Money Makin’ Manhattan, fitting for the man who proclaims “I Get Money.” Evidence of the 50 promotional machine was everywhere, not surprising since the G-Unit general is lagging behind Kanye West in the much hyped clash of the titans. There was the ubiquitous posters of 50’s logo, the Vitamin Water van replete with salespeople, and most stunning, once inside The Hammerstein ballroom, patrons were greeted with a full Best Buy retail staff in uniform selling 50’s CD for 10 dollars. The crowd ran the gamut from thug wannabees to the scantily clad, some stuffing their frames into low cut jeans that were a bit too small. There were no opening acts which led some to believe that the show would start on time. The crowd, who started filing in as early as 6:30 pm had to wait three hours before the lights went down to start the show, and let their displeasure be known with a chorus of boos.

Is 50 Cent slippin’? That’s the question that ran through my head on repeat after leaving the first night of his 5 Borough Tour at Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom. My dude Jay Rod has the full report so I won’t go in too hard about the show, but I will say it was probably the most interesting one I’ve been to all year.
Forget the fact that we waited for Curtis for over an hour, went to get something to eat then came back and waited for an additional 90 minutes. Forget the fact that the same security guard who told me I could only shoot the first three songs of 50’s set later asked for my all access pass so he could get some groupies in the pit alongside individuals who were actually working.

I just call it blissful pandemonium. T.I., Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Diddy, Ciara and Swizz Beatz all onstage together … with DJ Drama DJing! Last night at Madison Square Garden was amazing.
When you think about it, you literally have the top six hip-hop stars in the game right now, all together at once. You couldn’t pull that off if you planned it, really. It was one of those spontaneous hip-hop moments that will be dubbed classic. Here’s some of the behind-the-scenes info I heard:
Swizz Beatz was supposed to come out way earlier in the show, but he was late. Jay and Kanye were actually planned, but 50 and Diddy jumped onstage just out of love and showmanship. The display showed a lot to me last night. One, T.I. is King Kong huge. That was proven a couple of years ago, but pulling off what he did last night was just an astonishing look. It was a legendary move. I think that stunt alone put him even a level higher.

There’s all this talk about how Rihanna and Jay-Z’s “Umbrella” is the song of the summer because it’s been the #1 record in the world for practically the length of a whole school semester. But really, the song that’s keeping the streets and clubs on fire right now and for the rest of this season is 50 Cent’s “I Get Money.”
50 has dropped his most powerful record in a long time. Guess he got it. The fans weren’t crying for one of Fif’s slickly written radio hits — what’s been missing is the old 50 who talked greasy over the hardest of beats. Although I can’t trash “Straight to the Bank” and “Amusement Park” like some others (I actually think they’re pretty cool records), “I Get Money” is definitely the sure shot.
So when I heard Fif and the Unit were performing last night at New York’s
Hard Rock Cafe, I really wanted to go just to hear that one song. Real spit, “I Get Money” is that serious. Plus, I’ve seen 50 a million times before.
The Hard Rock show was different, though. Fif was taping “MTV Live,” and having performed overseas for the past several months had obviously tightened him up. His live show is more polished, and instead of just having Tony Yayo onstage (definitely the most entertaining member of the crew), he brought out Lloyd Banks and Young Buck. So obviously there’s no beef in the camp.
