Ting Tings Prove They’re The Real Thing Things In L.A.
August 6, 2008 - The El Rey Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
Last night I decided who I want to be when I grow up: Katie White, lead singer of the Ting Tings. I caught their show at the El Rey in Los Angeles and became a little girl in middle school wishing I could be a rock star all over again.
With just two members, the Ting Tings kept a high-energy show, and although they played a short set, every song was on point, and they added a lot of unexpected twists to hits that we have all already heard.
Katie started singing and playing keyboard, would play guitar for some songs, stuck to the mic for a while and hit the bass drum for their final hit song, “Shut Up and Let Me Go.” Her multitasking not only gave her an edge, setting her apart from the typical “girl in a band” lead singer, but also gave a preview of what exactly the Ting Tings are capable of, and how they are more than just the fun indie-rock band of the moment.
Her stage presence manages to combine just the right amount of girliness and badass rock star style all into one so that all the girls at the show would leave saying, “I want to be her,” and all the guys would leave saying, “I want to be with her.”
But Katie wasn’t the only one with major presence by any means. Drummer Jules De Martino brought a whole new meaning to the word multitask. Rocking red Ray-Ban sunglasses, at one point he was playing guitar and drums at the same time and seemed to be having the time of his life throughout his set. The only complaint I heard about him was that he never got a drum solo during the show, which — judging from the skill set he showed during the songs — would not only have been much deserved, but most likely very impressive.
On the whole, the Ting Tings deliver a fun indie-rock show that reminds you what a good concert should be — some great new music, dancing, new twists on things you’ve already heard and an insight as to what a band is really capable of.
