‘Rock Band’ Scores The Who For Surprise L.A. Performance
July 16, 2008 - Orpheum Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
“Yes.”
“No, who sings this song?”
“Yes.”
This game between me and my dad (which also involved the Guess Who and the capital of Alaska) kick-started a lifelong love for the Who, but I’d never seen the legendary rockers in person — until Wednesday.
Harmonix and MTV Games threw an E3 “Rock Band” party at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre for reporters, industry insiders and the lucky few of us unrelated to the gaming world who were able to score a ticket. The marquee promised a “special guest” would be performing, and I was blown away when I found out that the Who were the surprise band. Seriously???
While one might imagine that an industry crowd could be less than enthusiastic about watching a concert among colleagues, this was certainly not the case: The audience spazzed out over Pete Townshend’s guitar theatrics and Roger Daltrey’s mic-swinging tricks as the guys played “Can’t Explain,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and a string of other mega-hits. After the first few songs, Townshend told the crowd, “We’re a Who cover group.”
One of the highlights of the nearly two-hour show (yes, two hours — I was expecting “My Generation,” “Who Are You” and a wave goodbye) was the banter between the leading duo. As they traded playful jabs, a guy in the row behind me likened their relationship to a “40-year marriage.”
Townshend brought up the reason for the event, “Rock Band,” a few times throughout the night. “I wanna meet the guy who chose the colors for the plastic bits,” the guitarist said of the game’s rainbow-colored axes. When that Harmonix employee was pointed out in the front row, Townshend said, “It’s him? Bad choice.”
