Thievery Corporation Incorporate More Than A Dozen Guests Into Hollywood Bowl Show
June 22, 2008 - Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, CA
Thievery Corporation seem to really function as a corporation. DJ duo Rob Garza and Eric Hilton might be the CEOs, but you know from listening to their multilayered music that there’s a lot more going on than just turntables.
And we do mean a lot. The pair shared the Hollywood Bowl stage Sunday night with at least six singers (including Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell and Brazilian artist Seu Jorge), a guitarist, a pack of drummers, a sitar player, a pair of reggae rappers, a keyboardist, a horn section, a belly dancer and other auxiliary entertainers who helped bring their eclectic sound to life.
The crowd went crazy for the group’s more recognizable songs (like “Lebanese Blonde,” which was featured on the “Garden State” soundtrack), but fans were on their feet for the whole show, dancing to music that ranged from bossa nova to reggae to lounge to whatever else these guys could come up with.
A highlight of the concert came about 10 songs in, when regular Thievery contributor Karina Zeviani hit the stage a second time in a gold bandeau top and flowy skirt to lead the crowd in a “la-la-la” sing-along to the group’s “Exilio (Exile).” Her energy was infectious, and if any fans were planning on taking their seats, it wasn’t during this song.
Thievery’s laid-back style and atmospheric sound were a perfect fit for a warm night at the Bowl. It was hard to believe they could make their rich music even richer, but seeing what pieces make up the complex songs made for a whole new experience.
The performance helped kick off the 10th anniversary of public-radio station KCRW-FM’s World Music Festival. Federico Aubele, Los Amigos Invisibles and Bebel Gilberto (who did an amazing downtempo version of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams”) warmed up the crowd before the main event.
As for the cool-down, the band and its many guest stars rolled to the Tropicana Bar in Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel to lounge poolside to some equally laid-back music. It was a surreal scene as Carson Daly (who was celebrating his 35th birthday) introduced himself to Farrell and chatted up the Lollapalooza mastermind for a half-hour, as the men of the hour — Garza and Hilton — mingled with their fans and fellow performers.
