When a major act plays in Austin, Texas, you can pretty much count on Club Kingsnake to be there with Nikons around their necks. On Sunday night they were at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q, capturing the mayhem of the Used.

After surviving multiple breakups, the Verve are back. The British rockers, best known for their late-’90s single “Bittersweet Symphony,” played the second of two shows at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. It’s been years since the band, currently in its original four-person lineup, last toured the United States. Despite this, Tuesday night’s concert proved they can still put on a great live show.
The Verve opened the night with “A New Decade,” the first track on 1995’s A Northern Soul. Lead singer Richard Ashcroft’s voice was clear and resonated throughout the venue, holding its own against the psychedelic swirling sounds of the accompanying music. The set list featured a large number of songs from 1997’s Urban Hymns, even though the band has plenty of older material along with plans to release a new album this year. That being said, the band did play a few older songs that included a B-side and “Already There” from their 1993 full-length debut, A Storm in Heaven. They also included two new songs: “Sit and Wonder” and “Love Is Pain.”

Sunday we decided to take it a little easier. After spending the day at a great pool party held by Anthem magazine (with some great DJs) I headed over to the fields around 6:30 and caught Sia’s show, which was a very relaxing experience and a good start to what would be an electro/house-music-filled night.
I went over to catch the first few Roger Waters songs, and to be perfectly honest I was a little bored — not my generation, I guess. Then I got a DJ set by Simian Mobile Disco, who were a great warm-up to what was to come, followed by Chromeo, who kept the party going, and finally my favorite part of Coachella: Justice.
Even if European house isn’t your thing, I guarantee these DJs will blow your mind. Not only do they play an insane set, but they are serious showmen, with an intense over-the-top presentation to accompany their heavy beats. They played for an hour and a half and closed the festival on an extremely high note, leaving fans hot, happy and energized for some very long trips home.

M.I.A. deserves her own post. Seeing this woman play at Coachella was one of the most intense experiences of my life. Remember how I said the show on Saturday was totally sold out? Well I’m pretty sure that ALL of Coachella went to see M.I.A, who was not on the main stage, therefore not having even close to enough space to accommodate her audience.

Saturday was the only sold-out day at Coachella, and the second I showed up I could feel it. After spending the morning at a BPM magazine pool party (because you can’t have Coachella without a great pool party) I arrived at the fields just in time to catch MGMT, one of my favorites, who played a really fun, energy-filled show.

After a three-hour drive to get from Los Angeles to the Polo Fields in Indio I managed to arrive to Coachella just in time to see the Raconteurs play a few songs. I have to say I was blown away. Jack White gave a guitar solo that left the audience completely in awe. Next time the band is here in L.A. I plan on catching the entire show … from the front row — not the back of a dusty, crowded field filled with tons of hipsters.

This year’s Coachella festival is under way, so let’s take a look at what the bloggers are saying …
- Vampire Weekend “were fun, as I expected them to be. When they played ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa,’ singer Ezra Koenig admitted they hadn’t ever played it in Cape Cod, but they’ve played it plenty of times in SoCal. ‘This might be its spiritual home,’ he said. They were fun and they played hit ‘A-Punk’ midway through the set. Koenig tried to get people to dance, but told the crowd it was okay to refrain if it was too hot. That didn’t stop people from chanting, ‘Hey! Hey! Hey!’ along with the chorus, though.” (MP3 Blog)
- “Thoughts from the [Raconteurs] show: This band is everything you need to have a great rock performance: loud, unpolished, raw and most importantly cocky. Their enthusiasm for the music is displayed clearly in their lack of enthusiasm for the crowd. It seems like they could be practicing in the garage and they couldn’t care less that we were there watching them. It was a ruckus nonetheless.” (Attacked By Jackets)
