Ticket Stubs: The Hives, The Pogues, Sia, Duffy

Posted by MTV News, New York, NY, at 6:55 pm EST on Thursday, March 20th, 2008

- “The Hives came out in their classic matching suits and jumped right into a couple songs from their newest release, The Black and White Album. Throwing in a few songs from the previous releases Tyrannosaurus Hives and Veni Vidi Vicious, the Hives … played for almost an hour straight with a few minutes’ break and another 15-minute encore.” (Club King Snake)

- “I scored a front-row-center seat to the Pogues concert last night at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. … I had a smashing time and can’t wait to see them again. The entire audience was focusing on them the whole time. Pogues fans are pretty damned happy during a show. I don’t know if it’s the music or the ambience of being in the room with those guys. Most likely both. There were all ages there: I saw people old enough to be my parents and couples with small children wearing Irish green.” (Meow House Theatre)

- I’ve been reeling still from the Sia concert last Monday. To say it was fabulous is an understatement. :) … She sang three Zero 7 songs, the entire Some People Have Real Problems album and a few from Colour the Small One. She didn’t do any from Healing is Difficult, which I am in love with. She said she was crazy depressed when she wrote that, she saw a shrink, and now she’s just crazy. Ha.” (A Lil’ Somethin’ Somethin’)

- “[Duffy’s] voice — while strong and soulful — is unmistakably of the blue-eyed variety and, for lack of a better word, rather chaste-sounding. Very proper. Similarly, her stage presence is a bit stiff — I got the sense that despite being all smiles and politeness, she wasn’t completely comfortable onstage. I’ve read a few things about earlier performances to that effect and while I don’t doubt she’s made great strides as a performer, her (few) stage moves seemed overly rehearsed and not especially spontaneous. None of this should be surprising when you consider the speed of her ascendancy from nowhere, however.” (Chromewaves)

I was at Stubbs. I saw Duffy. I thought she was great and intriguing and sorry to state the obvious - was incredibly beautiful.
I am an indie follower and normaly find myself keeping away from the hype at sx, however seeing Duffy was a highlight. The songs were f—king great, she was haunting and the band were a jewish/black mix which was slighly reminscent of the Wrecking Crew. MTV… Your description of her performance was 2/10

Please note that the above description is not MTV’s description. It is a quote from the blog Chromewaves, as indicated by the link at the end of the passage. Thanks!
