The Hype: Crazy high. Swedish-born pop tart Robyn has not had a hit in the United States since 1997’s “Show Me Love,” and in the decade since, she’s basically been bounced from label to label. And yet, on Friday night, here she was, being cheered lustily at a fabulously promoted, highly attended SXSW party. And everyone knew the words to all her songs. Ah, the power of Perez Hilton.

The Show: Introduced by Hilton — it was his One Night in Austin party she was playing — as “the most exciting thing happening in pop music today,” Robyn took the stage dressed in an outfit that was part Elvira, part Beck circa the “Sexx Laws” video (very black, very short, very tassled on one arm) and begun to expertly vamp her way across the stage. What followed was 50-something minutes of glitchy, crackling electro-pop, sometimes fabulously profane (check the lyrical content of her hit “Konichiwa Bitches”), sometimes slightly sappy (the maudlin “With Every Heartbeat”) but always entertaining. And probably groundbreaking too. She even threw in a cover of Prince’s “Jack U Off.”

The Verdict: I’m not as sold on Robyn as one of my friends, who predicted she’d be headlining Madison Square Garden before the end of the year. To me, she’s just a little too odd to make it here in the States. But try telling that to the crowd at Perez’s party, or even the Queen of All Media himself. They’re all sold on Robyn, and maybe they’re right. Regardless, I’m all for more people getting a chance to hear her super-electronic, genre-busting brand of pop, and if this party was any indication, we’re well on our way to that.
