SXSW ‘08 Review: Working For A Nuclear Free City @ Levi’s/Fader Fort
March 14, 2008 - Levi's/Fader Fort, Austin, TX
The Hype: Hard to gauge. There were certainly crowds on hand at the Levi’s/Fader Fort on Friday afternoon, though it’s debatable whether they were there to catch the Manchester, England-born quartet, or to score some free Day-Glo 501 jeans. And while there were some rather vocal Mancunians (that’s fancy talk for “people from Manchester”) down in front, I’m thinking it was probably the latter.
The Show: Did we mention that Working for a Nuclear Free City are from Manchester? Because, boy are they ever. Their songs are a sonic smorgasbord of the past two decades of the city’s musical milestones, equal part Happy Mondays’ ecstasy rock, Stone Roses’ psych and, uh, Kasabian’s electo-pumpers. It makes for a rather head-whirring mix, but one that felt right at home at SXSW, were you could get the same effect by simply sprinting down Sixth Street as guitars, bass lines, cymbals and snares blare from every hole-in-the-wall joint. It’s a shame the sound guy decided to cut their set short because WFANFC had taken too long to set up their equipment.
The Verdict: Forget everything I wrote a second ago. Here’s a more basic way of explaining WFANFC: Every song by these guys sounds like the Chemical Brothers’ “The Private Psychedelic Reel,” or something from Yes’ Tales From Topographic Oceans, often at the same time. Which is pretty awesome, when you think about it.
