SXSW ‘08 Review: Paramore @ La Zona Rosa
March 14, 2008 - La Zona Rosa, Austin, TX
The Hype: How much hype do you think an ultra-successful, radio-friendly pop-punk band would garner down here in the indie Mecca that is Austin? Whatever answer you come up with, go ahead and subtract 20 percent.
The Show: Despite all that, Paramore managed to pack the hangar-like La Zona Rosa, not with jaded hipsters, but with squealing teenage scene kids (the difference is in the tightness of the trousers, and in the geographic proximity to the suburbs). Frontwoman Hayley Williams was reportedly battling some sort of vocal ailment (so said the band’s label, Atlantic), but she managed to push on through, and aside from a few vocal hiccups, she and Paramore delivered a hit-packed (”Misery Business,” “CrushCrushCrush”) high-energy set, their first since breakup rumors started swirling. (During an interview I did with the band earlier today, the group spoke openly for the first time about its situation.) Paramore appeared healthy, happy and well-rested, and Williams was her usual Super Ball/ spark plug self, bounding about the stage, dropping to her knees and leading countless audience sing-alongs.
The Verdict: At set’s end, the entire band joined hands and took a bow in unison, a powerful and unspoken message to those who thought Paramore were calling it quits: They aren’t going anywhere, not anytime soon. Which, given the energy cranked out tonight, is most certainly a good thing.
