SXSW ‘08 Review: Foxy Shazam @ Emo’s

March 15, 2008 - Emo's, Austin, TX

The Hype: I’m not going to lie. There wasn’t really any hype about Cincinnati’s Foxy Shazam. But I’m from Cincinnati and I wandered into Emo’s Friday afternoon by accident and ended up being pleasantly surprised the self-proclaimed “Evel Kneivel of rock and roll” outfit whose sound mixes a bit of Elvis swagger with prog rock, emo and straight-up hardcore punk.

The Show: High energy doesn’t really begin to describe these maniacs. Singer Eric Nally prances around like Prince, does that mic stand fandango like an indie-rock James Brown, and threw himself around the stage with such a fury that his right hand was covered in blood not long into the set. In between feats of acrobatic strength that included climbing a roof support pole onstage and sliding down it like the ugliest stripper you’ve ever seen, Nally asked for three cigarettes from the audience, lit them and then proceeded to eat and swallow them, played mega-mutton-chopped keyboardist Schuyler White’s back like it was a human piano and told a rambling story about how he ripped all the belt loops off his alleged pal actor Owen Wilson’s pants.

The Verdict: I’m a sucker for theatricality and Shazam put on one of the most over-the-top gigs in a sea of “look at me!” punk acts. And while the antics got a bit tedious at times (like that spoken word poem about “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and White’s constant goofy piano face), Shazam let it bleed and left a jaw-dropped impression on the mostly underage crowd.
