SXSW ‘08 Review: YACHT @ Levi’s/Fader Fort
March 12, 2008 - Levi's/Fader Fort, Austin, TX
The Hype: Plentiful. The line to gain access to the “Fader/Levi’s Fort” (as they’re calling it) stretched around the block (a scene that’s becoming troublingly commonplace at this year’s SXSW) to check out much-buzzed Portland electo spazz Jona Bechtolt, a.k.a. YACHT. Or perhaps they were just there for the free beer.
The Show: On this day, Bechtolt took to the stage accompanied by a female emcee/hypewoman who looked an awful lot like Khaela Maricich, his former partner in the Blow, which might explain why the 14 hipsters who were paying attention greeted his set by jumping for joy (that could also be an effect of all the free beer). There was much dancing and shimmying, and plenty of awkward interaction between band and audience when Bechtolt took to the floor, getting right in people’s faces, rapping with wild-eyed abandon. Much more free beer was spilled
The Verdict: Aside from that moment of Iggy-esque mania, the rest of the set kind of sounded like Baz Luhrman’s “Everyone’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” set to glitchy blips being played over a solitary MacBook Pro, with Bechtolt and Maricich (maybe?) repeatedly mumbling a series of mantras about suburbia and partying during the apocalypse. Suffice it to say, it was an acquired taste.
