All Time Low Hit An All-Time High At Tiny Club

January 29, 2008 - Lucky's Pub, Wilmington, NC

Posted by Ryankawamoto (from yourhere.mtv.com), Wrightsville Beach, NC, at 3:58 pm EST on Thursday, January 31st, 2008

On Tuesday night, All Time Low, along with Rookie of the Year, Every Avenue and Just Surrender, rocked the beach town of Wilmington, North Carolina. This was the smallest venue I have ever attended, but the small group of fans that showed up packed it with as much enthusiasm and energy as a stadium full of crazy fans.

One Republic Provide Relief At Otherwise Predictable Show

January 19, 2008 - The Madrid, Kansas City, MO

Posted by alex502 (from yourhere.mtv.com), Santiago, MO, at 3:37 pm EST on Thursday, January 31st, 2008

You know you’re in for a complete spectacle when you get to a concert and the roadies are dressed better than you are, the drummers play wearing designer wrist watches and the balcony is packed with trophy-wife tourists uttering condescending phrases like, “I can’t believe all those people down there want to stand on the floor.”

Saturday’s One Republic gig at the Madrid was just that kind of show, the kind where the music onstage only sort of makes up for the unholy combined BAC of 800 Mix 93.3 listeners.

The Daylights, a mellow three-piece from L.A., started the show. “We’re going to play some songs for you if that’s cool,” said one of the bandmembers, who took in some cheering while donning their instruments. Music began and I was impressed with the layered sound — even if the rest of the act oozed of rehearsed false modesty, right down to the stage moves and banter.

Vampire Weekend Throw A Bloody Good Launch Party For Debut LP

January 29, 2008 - Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY

Posted by John Norris (MTV News), New York, NY, at 6:35 pm EST on Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Why so serious?

I hate to borrow a line from the late, great Heath Ledger’s Joker, but after seeing the guys of Vampire Weekend at their most amped and energetic on Tuesday night, that’s kind of what I want to say to those VW-bashers who seem to harbor such antipathy for the boys from Columbia. What’s not to like?

“It’s exciting to be here again at our favorite place to play. And it’s nice to put out a record.” — Ezra Koenig

I guess so. For the past year and a half, Ezra, Rostam, Chris and Chris have played in almost every significant rock venue in New York, from Glasslands to Webster — but they returned to their club of choice, Bowery Ballroom, to launch their biggest tour to date, and to celebrate — at long last — the release of their debut album. For early VW converts, these songs have been around for a long time, even more so for the band, but on this night even the “oldies but goodies” as Ezra called ‘em, like “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” and “Oxford Comma,” had new life.

Presenting The New, Independent, More Real Ryan Cabrera

January 28, 2008 - The Woodlands Inn and Resort, Wilkes-Barre, PA

Posted by ralphieaversa (from yourhere.mtv.com), Wilkes Barre, PA, at 12:36 pm EST on Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

97 BHT’s Ralphie Aversa with Ryan CabreraForget “Slim Shady” — will the real Ryan Cabrera please stand up?

Just two and a half years ago, Cabrera lived THE life — recording for a major record label, dating sexy starlets, traveling the sphere and selling millions of CDs.

But the 25-year-old musician exited stage right from that lifestyle after separating with Atlantic Records. Cabrera traded his trademark dirty blond spikes for long, dark, curly strands. Gone are the preppy collars and trendy shoes, in are the rock star boots, top hats and skinny jeans. And say goodbye to long sleeves — the solo artist loves showing off his tats.

“I’m not with the same record label anymore, end of story,” an almost-relieved Cabrera said Monday inside the Woodlands Inn and Resort in Wilkes-Barre, PA. “I finally got to do what I wanted to do.”

Diana Ross Tries To Be Heard But Not Seen In Jamaica

January 24-26, 2008 - Aquaduct Rose Hall, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Posted by bgbland (from yourhere.mtv.com), New York, NY, at 5:38 pm EST on Monday, January 28th, 2008

It had been a few months since I’d last traveled to the Caribbean for a jazz festival, but once I heard Diana Ross, Jill Scott and Anita Baker were performing this year I had to get on a plane to Montego Bay.

This year’s Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival lineup did not disappoint. Anita Baker took the stage on Friday night. She ran through all of her hits, except my favorite, “I Apologize.” Saturday night I couldn’t have been happier that one of my favorite soul singers Jill Scott was set to perform. Right before Jilly from Philly took the stage, an announcer told the crowd that because the night’s headliner fell ill, Jill would be performing an extended set.

Lansdown Touch Down At Air Base In Kyrgyzstan

Posted by LANSDOWNE (from yourhere.mtv.com), Boston, MA, at 2:47 pm EST on Monday, January 28th, 2008

Editor’s note: Boston pop-punkers Lansdowne are touring overseas military bases, entertaining U.S. troops. You can follow along with their journey via photos, video and blogs right here on You R Here.

Landing in Kyrgyzstan was interesting, largely because I did not realize how far east we had traveled. When looking at a map, Moscow was in our wake by hundreds of miles and China had become our neighbor. The landscape was mountainous and covered in white, as temperatures hovered in the teens and maintained the fresh snowfall from the night before.

Kanye West Makes Surprise Appearance In NYC

January 25, 2008 - American Museum of Natural History, New York, NY

Posted by Steven Roberts (from yourhere.mtv.com), New York, NY, at 11:56 am EST on Monday, January 28th, 2008

Throughout her set Friday night, Kid Sister urged the crowd to “make some noise.” The Chicago MC, dressed like a flapper from the Cotton Club with bobbed blond-and-black hair, said her lackluster performance was due to a case of bronchitis. She had the remedy for both her and the crowd at Flavorpill’s One Step Beyond event series at the Rose Center of Earth and Science at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

In the surprises of all surprises, Kanye West took the stage to perform his verse on Kid Sister’s “Pro Nails.” The crowd erupted in disbelief. People began to climb the exhibits in the Cullman Hall of the Universe to get a better look at what they were seeing.

But sure enough, there he was onstage in all his glory, wearing a fur coat. In his first performance — in New York at least — since his European tour, Kanye West got the crowd to do what Kid Sister couldn’t. He got them to make noise.
