On The Road With Kenna: Flaming Tour Buses And Birthday Surprises

Posted by Kenna, Virginia Beach, VA, at 9:41 pm EST on Monday, November 5th, 2007

Kenna has been blogging for You R Here while on the road with She Wants Revenge. You can read his previous report here.

Been out here for a minute now …

Toronto and Montreal, Canada:

At the border crossing and security checkpoint. If you’ve ever had any convictions in the States, you’re not getting into Canada. We were fine in that department, but you never know, right? Some childhood mess-ups can be logged differently and bite you in the ass.

We got through and killed a couple shows in Toronto and Montreal.

Toronto is an interesting place. People there are so very cultured but have a big-city mindset as well. Always good to feel like you are absorbing an abundance of lifestyles and attitudes.

New York City

In NYC, Webster Hall. Took meetings and interviews in the day with random stations.

I stole a few minutes on my own to drop in on Union store on Spring St. Scored on a neighborhood jacket with “Fury” on it.

Ended up at MTV and had a few dope meetings there. The main one that truly inspired me was the think.mtv.com meeting. We came up with a bunch of amazing ideas on how my music career can be intertwined with social causes that are important to me.

The best part was that they felt like they could seriously help me do it. This is a vision I have had forever. I will be bringing that to you soon. Don’t sleep.

The show was OK. Sound trouble riddled the stage and we could barely hear ourselves. That’s just the way it is for openers (I’ve probably said this before).

We did our best. Some of my fans/friends came to the show and hooked up some birthday cakes and shirts for me. Thank you, Karly (the great), Kibbe, Ado and Vin!

Boston

Boston is always amazing. One of the best street-culture stores on the East Coast is Bodega — good luck finding it.

The illest characters come out to the show. We played the Paradise Club again.

The New England Revolution soccer team came out to check the show and brought me a goalie jersey! So amazing! Thanks, fellas.

I don’t think they knew by B-day was comin’ … But it was right on time.

Philly (so dope)

I cant tell you enough how welcome I felt in Philly this time. It was our third show in Philly this year, and each time the Kenna crew has grown.

I have to thank Brittany for hookin’ up the art. It was pretty exact for a few-hour doodle.

Thanks to everyone who came to the in-store at FYE! Support record stores, people!

Washington, DC

My sister and her man came to the show in DC. I always love seeing her. I always say she is the smarter, better looking version of me.

Emerald … You’re an angel.

Carrboro, North Carolina

Chapel Hill, Cats Cradle is the spot that a ton of amazing musicians have visited. Dope to hit that venue this time around on tour.

Atlanta

ATL was killer … I’m still wondering where all my friends were. I know maaaaaaaaad people in ATL, but none of them came …

What’d I do?

Orlando (my birthday)

Got in early to Orlando. Set-up for an in-store at Park Ave. It was in a really nice part of town. Park Ave staff were good to us and showed us around. There was a dope library/bookstore with a restaurant around the corner. I wish I could remember the name. If you are from Orlando, it’s across the street and behind the 7-11.

We did our show at Firestone. I had been fairly quiet about my birthday. Trying to avoid comments like “happy birthday.” Not that I hate birthdays … I’m just against ageism (ha) and would rather just know personally that it was that day and move on. Though I got away with a few “H B-day” comments, but little did I know …

During the middle of the She Wants Revenge set, I was dragged out onstage to a cake, crew, and audience.

I have to say, it was kinda dope.

Thanks, fam.

Dallas

A bulk of my massive extended family lives in Dallas. Always good to see my cousins.

What really threw me was the fact that people in Dallas were really singing “Say Goodbye to Love.”

Hey, hey.

Austin

We drove into Austin to a festival in full swing. Got a chance to catch Okkervil River and Explosions in the Sky before having to get back for sound check, etc.

The crowd at Emo’s was serious!!! They had music in mind and they got what they came for. We felt the energy onstage and put off the sonics to field the requests.

Phoenix

On our way to Phoenix. Amazing upset game, Colts vs. Patriots. Patriots pull it out. Wes Welker was on fire. He has completely come up. In the middle of the game I smell a little smoke, but we all disregard it as nothing.

Half-hour later … the smoke is overwhelmingly obvious and we check the back of the bus to find the entire back end on fire!!!

It wasn’t a small fire, it was a fiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrreeeeee!!!

Such an eerie feeling. It was calm for the seconds of realization, but then the mayhem set in. It was loudness and chaos. Obviously there was no bus fire drill. We all grabbed what we could and saved important equipment, but not without inhaling an excess amount of smoke — and carcinogenic smoke at that.

We all were safe and made it out without any tragedy. However, there were a few kicks charred and gear smoked out. :)

Sucks, but we will continue …
