CMJ ‘07: A-Track, Mehdi Shine At Fool’s Gold Showcase
October 17, 2007 - Hiro Ballroom, New York, NY
There could only be two reasons a mix of hipsters, sneakerheads and 30-year-olds trying to recapture something would start to gather. Either there was sample sale on jeans or Fool’s Gold was throwing a party!
As you might have guessed — being on MTV’s Web site and all — it was the latter. The Hiro Ballroom hosted the record label’s CMJ showcase Wednesday night, featuring DJs Nick Catchdubs, A-Track and Mehdi as well as performances by Kid Sister and the Cool Kids.
As people trickled in, they were greeted by Catchdub’s eclectic stylings. The Brooklyn-based DJ mixed together a set featuring Redman, Pink and dancehall act Ding-Dong almost seamlessly.
The universal mix was representative of the crowd. People — black, white, Asian — filled the Japanese-themed ballroom. Paper lanterns hung over a crowd dressed in fashion from Harlem boutiques, Williamsburg thrift shops and Long Island Targets. Whatever their differences, they all wanted to have a good time.
The Cool Kids did their best to make sure they did. As cameras flickered, the Chicago duo of Mikey Rocks and Chuck E. Inglish stepped onstage dressed in the latest in retro fashion. They were sporting acid-wash jeans along with loud, vibrant shirts, fitted hats and Jordans.
If their outfits didn’t catch your attention, their set did. Their beats sound like a mash-up of you stumbling upon your older brother’s turntables with your Super Nintendo blaring in the background. The bass, from their sample-heavy beats, forced you to nod your head, whether you wanted to or not.
The duo were also armed with very visual and flamboyant lyrics. You hung on the braggadocio of every punch line. No matter how ridiculous the metaphor, you couldn’t help but smile.
Kid Sister did her best to keep you grinning. She came onstage next with tremendous energy. Decked out in a sequined blouse — which she clearly took from the back of her grandmother’s closet — Kid Sis hit the stage running … well, jumping.
She jumped through most of her performance of “Telephone” and “Beeper.” Her performance was as up-tempo as her music. She was gyrating and moving — or juking, as she called it — at a frantic pace. I’ve never seen worse dancing from someone having so much fun.
Her performance of “Pro Nails” was the highlight of her set. Many in the crowd had been requesting all night that she play it. She finally did, delivering a pulse-pounding performance.
The performance of the night, however, didn’t actually belong to any performers. The DJs were king. DJ Mehdi and A-Track got behind the turntables and set the party off. The crowd was slave to their will.
The room was filled with an insane amount of free-flowing energy and a feeling of euphoria. This diverse crowd was now just a mass of flailing arms. They were all united in the celebratory mood of the music.
