Q-Tip Brings Out Stevie Wonder For Show-Stopping Encore
October 14, 2007 - Key Club, West Hollywood, CA
Last night, Q-Tip played what could be the most amazing encore I’ve ever seen, and then he brought out Stevie Wonder. Yes, STEVIE WONDER. I couldn’t believe it — no one could.
Tip’s encore came right after an ecstatic crowd begged him to return to the stage, so loud it rivaled any rock show I’ve been to. So Tip came back, rocked the crowd with “Vivrant Thing” and “Award Tour,” then broke into Stevie’s classic “Superstition.” Now Tip’s no singer but he was holding his own. Then halfway through, he stopped and said, “Hold up, there’s someone better here that can do this.”
But it took a good two minutes to find who he was looking for. He looked stage right, looked backstage, and then disappeared into the back while the live band continued to play “Superstition.” Then we heard it. “Very superstitioouuus!” It sounded just like his soulness himself, but could it be? It took a sec to figure out who it was (Tip was actually leading Stevie down the backstage hall while the legend continued to sing). Then the two emerged onstage, five feet away from me, and the crowd went absolutely nuts.
Stevie took his place at the piano and did a little freestyling with the live band backing him, Tip over his shoulder and DJ Scratch from the legendary EPMD on the ones and twos. It was an amazing show up until that point, but Stevie put it right over the edge.
Before Stevie came out, Tip played a slew of A Tribe Called Quest favorites and a few of his solo joints, including his new song “Official.” And he even gave a nod to Fiascogate, telling the crowd, “For all of you who have liked or not liked A Tribe Called Quest, thank you for coming out.” Now do you think we’d see Stevie show up at a Lupe Fiasco show? That’s the question.
