As you probably already know, Van Halen kicked off their when-pigs-fly reunion tour in Charlotte, North Carolina, last night. So what are bloggers saying about the show today? Might as well jump in and see …
- Blogger Bob F. says he got goose bumps several times during the show, and proclaims: “In the encyclopedia, the definition of the term ‘Rock Show’ should read: ‘See: Van Halen.’” (Extrawack!)
- Eric Banks fought through the pain of a recently broken pelvis to see the rock gods perform. Was it worth it? “The show was awesome,” he reports. (Eric Banks’ Blog)
- Mollygood weighs in with some fashion critiques, proclaiming, “If it’s too comfortable, you’re too old” and taking aim at Eddie Van Halen’s slip-on shoes and capri pants. (Mollygood)
- And finally, Jeff Hahne’s got lots of photos from the big night, including a top-hat-wearing Diamond Dave and a slightly bewildered-looking Wolfgang Van Halen. (Vibes: The Music Blog)

Maná are the first Latin act to sell out four consecutive evenings at the Staples Center (capacity 20,000) in Los Angeles. Sabor Latino was in the HOUSE!
The feat that Maná accomplished from September 20 to September 24 has only been matched by Neil Diamond.
This show was HUGE! The audience sang along with every song played, some of which were: “Labios Compartidos,” “Corazón Espinado,” “Bendita Tu Luz,” “Huele a Tristeza,” “Mariposa Traicionera” and “Eres Mi Religión.” They also played songs that I’m sure you’d recognize from your 1999 Maná: MTV Unplugged CD ;o), like “Rayando el Sol,” “Vivir sin Aire” and “Te Solte la Rienda.” It seemed as though I was the only person in the venue who didn’t know every word to every song.

Scanning various blog updates today, we find reviews of Fall Out Boy playing Down Under, Megadeth playing a few notches below the top of their game, and Def Leppard playing with their shirts off.
- Fall Out Boy played in Brisbane, Australia, last night, causing one blogger’s head to explode (not literally, we hope) and forcing her to endure barricade bruising, ringing ears and “mozzie” bites. (LiveJournal)
- Megadeth in NYC: “Head banging, crowd surfing, fist pumping, devil horns, mucho beer and whiskey consumption (and throwing), nonstop MOSHING… check check check check check check CHECK. How many metal moment checks is that? A lot.” (Ear Farm)
- Is “gunter glieben glauchen globen” German for “keep your shirt on”? If so, perhaps Def Leppard should be taking their own advice. How old are those guys, anyways? (Greasergrrl’s Surprise Machine)
- Maeve floats with Nick Lowe again, 18 years later, and — even though the music is timeless — feels a little old. (Bitzen Pieces)

‘American Idol’ veterans are on bloggers’ brains today, thanks to current tours by Daughtry and Elliott Yamin. Meanwhile, indie pop acts Tegan and Sara make quite an impression, whereas the New Pornographers don’t seem to be singing quite as good as in the old days.
- The undeniably sexy (their words, not ours) Chris Daughtry made his first trip to Sydney, Australia, and impressed the locals with his command of their lingo. (Oz Music Scene)
- A blogger in Cebu, Philippines, has photos from last night’s Elliott Yamin show there, including photos of himself with his, uh, idol. (SpIdEy’S CoBwEbSiTe)
- Tamara G from Edmonton, Alberta, is all-caps stoked about meeting Tegan and Sara at the posh Francis Winspear Centre for Music, where, like the town in “Footloose,” dancing is forbidden. (GreatestJournal)
- The band was tight, but the vocals were a little off as the New Pornographers trotted out their new tracks at the Showbox in Seattle. (LiveJournal)

A former church turned humanist gathering place — New York’s Society of Ethical Culture — was the location on Monday night for a band from Albuquerque (by way of New York) that sports a Middle Eastern name, was single-handedly responsible for exporting Balkan music to the blogosphere a year ago and has now gone all Gallic on us — our favorite accordion-mandolin-ukulele-horn-playing octet, Beirut, led by the globetrotting prodigy Zach Condon.

You can count on Bjork to bring some fashion and fun to a Monday evening! Check out photos of the colorful chanteuse from her Madison Square Garden concert, plus lots more concert reportage that hit the blogosphere today.
- Our blogging brethren over at the Subterranean Blog have posted some stunning images of Bjork’s NYC gig last night. (Subterranean Blog)
- A Plain White T’s show in a Wal-Mart parking lot turned ugly, according to a report relayed by Oh No They Didn’t! Apparently 3,500 fans turned out and as the crowd swelled, several fans turned violent, while others hyperventilated. (Oh No They Didn’t!)
- Blogger Cara Hadley provides lessons on being a true butt-rocker and commentary on inebriated audience members, but sadly not much insight into how awesome Def Leppard were. (Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much)
- What’s it like to be the cool older people tailgating before a Dave Matthews Band show? Jammi, a 30-year-old mom of two, fills us in. (Jammi, Kyle, Kennedy & Korbin…)

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing two new acts that opened up for the Editors at the Wiltern in Los Angeles.
As the venue began to fill, Ra Ra Riot took the stage and a few Ra Ra superfans in the back chanted “Ra! Ra! Riiiiiot!” a few times — kind of like one of those sports chants, “Let’s! Go! Giiiiants!” While the band had some fanatics in their corner, I wish I could say the same for the rest of the crowd. Most of the people there came to see Editors, and a few were very vocal about it.
Despite the annoying “Play Editors!” calls between songs, I enjoyed what Ra Ra Riot had to bring. The Syracuse, New York, sextet played a sort of indie folk rock — at times there were hints of country from the violin and cello, but not enough to distract you from the music. I’d compare them to a young Arcade Fire — very young, actually. I’d have to check their IDs before buying them a drink at the show, but they definitely deserved one after their set.

We have seen good, bad and ugly on our many adventures at dozens of different rock shows and festivals, but Street Scene made us proud to call ourselves San Diego natives! We knew it was going to be a good day when right when we got out of our car we were approached by a group of girls in tank-tops that read, “Ask me about the dryhump special,” who then handed us orange jello-shots. Although we must admit that with the lack of people at the venue around 3 o’clock, the light rain storm and newcomer Carina Round doing high kicks in a gaudy, overly-full purple skirt, we were a bit skeptical at first.
Street Scene is a two day San Diego tradition that used to literally take place on the streets of San Diego in Pacific Beach. Due to resident complaints it was moved to Qualcomm Stadium and this year, to Coors Amphitheater in Chula Vista (which as you may recall, was also the site of our hellacious Projekt Revolution experience and of San Diego’s Warped Tour). This year’s Street Scene boasted the largest variety of acts that we’ve seen! From Muse to T.I, from Panic! At the Disco to T-Pain - there was something for everyone to be excited about!

Scanning the blogosphere’s concert reviews from this past weekend, we hear from one of Fall Out Boy’s Indonesian stalkers, get a look at Fergie in traditional Kazakh clothing and learn that apparently America’s #1 rock band is from Canada.
- A 16-year-old accounting student in Jakarta gives his account of staking out Fall Out Boy at their hotel after a show, and then hunting them down at a shopping mall the next day. (The Worst Damn Thing)
- Check out the Black Eyed Peas‘ Fergie dressed in traditional Kazakh garb during one of the first big Western concerts to be staged in Kazakhstan. We’ll spare you the “Borat” jokes, but we will wonder aloud whether the outfit needed dry cleaning afterward. (David Honl Weblog)
- “Hordes of lumpy dudes” pack into “a banner-ad-ridden former landfill” to watch a “lanky,” “dorky” bassist and the rest of Arcade Fire unleash an “epic, brutal and grief-stricken sonic Armageddon.” (All Shook Down)
- Muse prove arena rock isn’t dead during their show at an amphitheater — check out the photographic evidence. (LAist)
