Lollapalooza ‘07: Death Don’t Know No Mercy … Except Stating The Obvious

If Saturday was bathed in the shadow of evil, Sunday dawned with the foul stench of death. In addition to the eye-watering odor of baking porta-potties and fetid mud rising off the waterlogged fields, a few of the early rising artists seem to have the great hereafter on their minds.

Dax Riggs, formerly of Deadboy and the Elephantmen (one hit already, before I even get started), played a mini-suite of sweet release songs during his set on the AT&T Stage that started with a blown-out blooze cover of Richard and Linda Thompson’s “Wall of Death” (”Let me ride on the wall of death one more time”), which segued into Deadboy’s fuzzed-out “Stop, I’m Already Dead” and the song “Living in Suicide” from his upcoming solo debut. The lyrics included “The death of things / … Burn everything I see / … Evil friend.”

Another kind of death, of the brain variety, was taking place at the other end of the festival grounds during a set by Wakefield, England, siblings act the Cribs. “We’re not one of those cheesy festival bands,” said singer/guitarist Ryan Jarman, who appeared to be trying to kill himself by coming out in tight jeans and a black leather jacket while facing directly into the sun. Hey, Ry Ry, guess what? You are one of those cheesy festival bands, because you’re playing a festival and your sound is sometimes a cheesy Brit Pop rehash. Ryan and twin bassist Gary redeemed themselves, though, during the bash-and-pop banger “I’m a Realist,” during which Gary sang the lines “I’m a realist, I’m a romantic,” with Ryan chiming in “I’m an indecisive piece of sh–.” Nice.

It’s “Living IS Suicide” and it’s an awesome tune, like everything Dax has done. From Acid Bath to Deadboy and the Elephantmen to Agents of Oblivion to Dax Riggs — everything he touches is gold as far as I’m concerned. Rock on, sexy Dax.
