Lollapalooza ‘07: Evil Is All Around

August 4, 2007 - Grant Park, Chicago, IL

Clap Your Hands Say YeahEvil is all around. What happened to “Hello, Chicago! How are you f—ers doin’? Now clap your hands and repeat after me: Whoa, whoa whoa!” Instead, you’ve got Clap Your Hands Say Yeah hyping the kids up to sing “Satan, Satan!” from “Satan Said Dance.”

And they did, like they meant it, especially the guy smashed up against the barrier whose eyes were rolling back in his head before the band even took the stage. I pointed the eye roller out to security because a) he freaked me out and b) I sensed something that kind of felt like laser beams on the back of my neck coming from his general direction. Then I noticed that security was a guy four times my size with what was clearly a tattoo of some kind of evil being crawling out from under the collar of his shirt. Yeah, never mind, it’s cool.

Across the way, reborn 1960s Texas acid casualty Roky Erickson was summoning dark forces himself with wicked garage blues courtesy of “The Beast” (”the beast is coming to your world”). And then there was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ Karen O, who didn’t necessarily sing about the dark forces gathering (cue the rain, which started coming down in drizzles during their set after threatening all day), but still managed to seem like she was calling the devil on shortwave thanks to her wild screeches, howls and microphone-in-mouth bellows.

Really wanted to catch CYHSY, but had to check out The Roots instead. It was a tough call, and because we were so far back, we probably made the wrong choice. Check out my Day 2 review here:
