Girls Gone Punk: Paramore Have Got Us Where They Want Us Now!
“At the count of 3, let’s educate all those who don’t know what the name of the new album is,” orders Paramore’s pint-sized singer Hayley Williams into her microphone. 1…2…3… “RIOT!!!” screams the crowd in unison. “RIOT!!!”
Appropriately titled, a riot is literally the only way to describe the complete fandemonium experienced at every one of Paramore’s Warped Tour sets. Their new album has caused quite a raucous on music charts as well, reaching an impressive 20 on the US Hot 200, while the album’s first single and ultimate revenge anthem “Misery Business” is at a current position of 75 (and rising!) on the US Hot 100 and 31 on the UK Singles Chart! Their 2005 LP “All We Know is Falling” never found a home on any US chart, further showing how quickly this Tennessee 4-some are achieving stardom and inevitable initiation into the pop-punk hall of fame.
Right beside pioneers New Found Glory, Paramore has found impressive company as one of this year’s Warped Tour headliners. And although they are the youngest band on the tour, you best believe they are holding their own… and doing it in S-T-Y-L-E!
Every day Hayley, Josh Farro (guitar), Jeremy Davis (bass) and Zac Farro (drums) hit the stage, audiences are welcomed by an explosion of bright yellow, red, black and orange clothing. So far, Jeremy’s ensemble of butt-hugger red jeans and a black V-neck tee under a black suit vest in AZ has been our favorite!
Although expertly color coordinated, Paramore is FAR from some punk-scene, cookie-cutter fashion band. And the main factor separating them from the pack is of course, their leading lady!
With boundless stage presence, endless charisma and serious vocal chops, Hayley Williams is quickly becoming the most recognizable front woman since Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. Except, unlike our dear Gwen, we don’t see Hayley putting out any solo techno/dance albums anytime soon! That’s because Hayley is the real deal and nothing solidifies her more as THE punk rock princess than seeing her live.
You know how sometimes (well, let’s admit it, most of the time), you listen to a band’s album and their singer has this great voice (take Cute is What We Aim For, for example), but when you go see them in concert you can’t help but think “Who the hell gave this kid a record deal!?” Well… Hayley will NEVER disappoint. In fact, those shivers you get down your back every time you hear her hit those high notes in “Hallelujah” are only amplified by the stage’s speakers! In fact, she sounds even BETTER live! Take that!
And then… there’s the hair! We’re not sure what’s louder – Hayley’s voice, or the fire-bright orange/red/pretty freaking awesome color she’s been rocking lately! All you Paramore lovers out there, don’t try her look at home. It won’t work for you. Sorry.
With a combined age average of 19 (Zac JUST turned 17 - don’t you feel like a total molester for thinking he’s hot now!?), Paramore has only just begun. And thank the punk rock god, because sometimes, this scene just needs a good RIOT!
XO,
Shaia and Lisa
P.S. OH and remember kids, “Once a whore you’re nothing more.”
