Buzzbombs Drop On San Diego
July 14, 2007 - Zombie Lounge, San Diego, CA
As far as bars in San Diego go, the Zombie Lounge holds a special place in my heart. Not only does it have a cool rockabilly/punk vibe, but they have great live music on the weekends. This Saturday, the Buzzbombs graced the stage to provide another night of stories to tell the grandchildren.
Walking into a sea of pompadours and polka dots, the night began with the slapping of an upright bass and the taste of a perfectly mixed drink. If you’re looking for a band that has meaningful lyrics and a message to take home with you, the Buzzbombs are your men. With songs like “Truck Driving Vampires,” “Hot Rod Girl,” “You’re Ugly” and, everyone’s favorite, “The San Diego Drinking Song,” you can’t help but sit back and think about what really matters in life: booze, dames and some good tunes.
(Check out pictures from the show.)
The Buzzbombs are all about having fun with the crowd. At this particular show, the fans were pretty wild and I learned a new word: “wrecking.” “Wrecking” is what my generation used to call moshing, but now it’s all in the elbows. I learned that the hard way and went home with a couple of bruises. After I picked myself up off the pool table I was thrown onto, I looked onstage to find that the guitarist/lead singer known as Johnny Fuego was missing. He had found his way through the crowd and climbed up on the bar where he played his guitar in perfect form as a shot of Jägermeister was poured down his throat.
Then “The San Diego Drinking Song” began and all hell broke loose. I was invited onstage to sing the chorus with the band (it is a sing-along song, after all). There were bottles smashing, beer flying and at that moment I was glad to be onstage and not in the crowd. But as I’ve learned over the past three years of being a Buzzbomb “groupie,” the more riled up the crowd gets, the more dynamic the band becomes, and pretty soon there was nowhere to hide from the insanity. The guitarist was up on Johnny Diablo’s stand-up bass, Diablo was playing while standing on his own bass, and Johnny Magnum bashed his drums. I was inches away from being assaulted with a beer bottle, and that was the end of the show.
As the clock struck 2 a.m. and the bartender announced the all-too-familiar “last call for alcohol,” I gathered my things and thanked the Buzzbombs for another unforgettable show.

Those of you that have had the pleasure of watching these boys perform live will understand when I say that The Buzzbombs are “my” band. Watching the Johnny’s play one can’t help but get caught up in the moment…They play for their fans and they play well. Fun, silly, fast and downright talented Fuego, Diablo and Magnum play to the crowd in a way that makes every show an experience. I recommend you go see them sometime and I guarantee that when you do they will become your band too.

You forgot to mention the part where Johnny Fuego ran around the dancefloor with his pants pulled down around his ankles. Why?? Because that’s how crazy Buzzbomb shows get!

you didn’t mention that the lead singer was your boyfriend. a bit of nepotism on the MTV blog, hug? why don’t you review bands that matter?
