Snoop Dogg Pays Tribute To The Old School In Hollywood

June 26, 2007 - The Music Box @ Fonda, Hollywood, CA

As Snoop’s opening act at Hollywood’s Music Box @ Fonda on Tuesday night, 70-year-old actor/comedian Rudy Ray Moore began his monologue by saying, “Dolemite is my name, and f—ing up mutha—-ers is my game” — which was especially funny when juxtaposed with his four-man-assisted entrance as he was carried onstage in a wheelchair.

He rolled out to the front of the stage and gave a 30-minute monologue about how everyone should sell their bodies and how we should put him on our ballots as a write-in candidate for president. He said he would make Eddie Murphy his vice president and “get this place going right. Get it real funky.” He “wouldn’t promise [us] a damn thing,” and that would be exactly what we would get: nothing. He would legalize stealing. (”Just don’t get caught!”) He told the younger ladies in the room not to sleep with old men because “it’s like pushing a car uphill with a rope.” Sounds difficult! After his rant, he insisted that we listen to the beginning of each of the tracks on the CD he was selling for $10 in the lobby, during which he chewed out the DJ for the sound being too loud, not loud enough and for not playing the sample long enough.

Then Snoop and the Snoopadelics came onstage. Snoop brought out all the oldie-but-goodies, which made his performance especially enjoyable for the fans following him for the last 10-plus years. It seemed like everyone knew each song verbatim. He specifically asked the girls to sing “Ain’t No Fun” with him, which is one of the filthiest, disgusting and most degrading songs toward females, BUT the girls really do love to sing it.

Of course there were the standard one or two girls in the front letting it be known what they wanted to do with Snoop after the show. This brought him right into his remix of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” The crowd loved it, and so did the 65-plus-year-old “Uncle June Bug,” who was onstage all night cutting a rug. Even Snoop commended the man’s moves. “Oooh, you’re going hard tonight, huh, Uncle June Bug? Damn.” Also part of the onstage posse were Kurupt, Young Buck, Western Union, DJ Battlecat and many more.

Toward the end of the show, Snoop graciously thanked everyone in the audience for coming out and continuing to support him. As Snoop has been quoted saying: “Without Rudy Ray Moore, there would be no Snoop Dogg, and that’s for real.” He also said this about his fans. He ended the show by leading the entire theater into a modified rendition of a very popular song by Steam. “Na-na-na-na … na-na-na-na … hey, hey, hey … Snoop Dogg.”

    Wow… “oldie-but-goodies”?? “cutting a rug”??

I didn’t know they let 80 year old women into rap shows.
