Bonnaroo ‘07: Nice To Meet You, Mr. White
June 17, 2007 - Bonnaroo, Manchester, TN
There are probably, like, 700 bands playing Bonnaroo, but in terms of sheer star power, there are really only two: the Police and the White Stripes.
And since Sting and Co. passed on our requests for an interview, we set our sights on the Stripes. So at 4:30, amidst a sea of photographers (and director Jim Jarmusch), I sat down for a chat with Jack and Meg. And it was awesome.
They talked a ton about their upcoming Icky Thump album, including Jack’s take on the whole Q101 situation that led to its leaking. To discuss it all here seems a bit of a disservice, but expect a full piece when I return to NYC.
Oh, and Meg totally ate a cherry ice pop at one point (gotta keep it color coordinated), and they were both nice enough to share some sage camping advice with us too.
Then, as soon as the interview was over, I almost trampled a security guard who had passed out from the heat. Ah, harsh reality.
Anyway, we’re entering the home stretch, with just a few bands left to see (Wilco, the Stripes, Feist) and a whole lotta garbage to pick up back at base camp before Bonnaroo 2007 is a wrap. I’ll check back in later, and you can expect a big blowout — both on-air and online — later this week.

A “bruising, squealing 90-minute set that spanned the band’s entire career”? You mean all eight or nine years of it?

“sheer star power”… Give me a break.

10 years, they have been around for 10 years now. The set was bruising and squealing, awesome, just plain old awesomeness.
